Ask Nell uses very few cookies, and none of them follow you around the internet. This page lists every cookie we set, what it does, and how you can control it.
1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. They're how a site remembers you between pages — that you're signed in, or what you chose in a form. Some cookies are essential to make a site work at all; others are optional.
2. Strictly necessary cookies
These are required for the Service to function — signing in, staying signed in, and protecting your account. They are always set, don't require consent under GDPR/ePrivacy rules, and contain no tracking.
| Cookie | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|
session |
Keeps you signed in as you move between pages | Browser session |
remember_token |
Keeps you signed in between visits ("remember me") | Up to 1 year |
csrf_token |
Protects forms and requests against cross-site request forgery | Browser session |
3. Analytics cookies (optional, consent-based)
On our public pages only (the landing page, pricing, and these
policy pages) we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors find
and read them. GA4 sets first-party cookies (_ga, _ga_*).
- Analytics never runs inside the signed-in app — once you're signed in, there is no analytics at all.
- Analytics cookies are only set if you accept them in the cookie banner. Choosing "Essential only" means they are never set.
4. Third-party widgets
If human-verification is enabled on the signup form, hCaptcha may set its own cookies when that page loads, governed by hCaptcha's privacy policy. We use it solely to keep automated abuse out of registration.
5. Local storage (not cookies)
We keep a few preferences in your browser's local storage rather than in cookies — your theme and text-size settings, and your cookie-consent choice itself. These never leave your device.
6. How to control cookies
- The cookie banner on your first visit lets you accept or decline analytics cookies. You can change your mind any time using the cookie preferences link (also in the footer of every page).
- Your browser can block or delete cookies for any site. Blocking the strictly necessary cookies will prevent sign-in from working.
